City of Des Moines 2010 SCRUB

The Department of Public Works, in cooperation with the Des Moines Neighbors and the Neighborhood Revitalization Board, has worked to schedule a number of SCRUBs (Spring Cleanup to Remove Urban Blight) in 2010. This year, the Department of Public Works will continue the use of Metro Waste Authority (MWA) Transfer Station at 4198 Delaware Avenue and the MWA Compost Park at 1601 Harriett Street on nine Saturdays. New in 2010, arrangements have been made to allow Des Moines residents to haul trash to the MWA Metro Park East Landfill at 12181 University Avenue NE, Mitchelville. Residents hauling trash at no charge to the Metro Park East landfill should have their loads secured to avoid tarping fees. Tires and appliances are subject to MWA fees. SCRUB Guidelines

• Residents of Des Moines only
  • Proof of Residency required; Photo ID or current utility bill
• Hours: 7 AM to Noon
  • Neighborhood SCRUB 7 AM TO NOON
  • MWA’s Metro Transfer Station/Metro Compost Center Hours: 7 AM to 1 PM
  • MWA’s Metro Park East Landfill - hours vary, see calendar
  Note: Metro Waste Authority’s Metro Transfer Station and the Metro Compost Center are NOT open to the public, except on Saturday SCRUB day events. Des Moines residents may haul trash at no charge to the MWA Metro Park East Landfill on specified SCRUB Saturdays. Normal tipping fees apply during other landfill business hours.
• No Commercial Haulers
  • Commercial Haulers are to use Landfill

  • Trash containers
  • General trash including furniture
  • Lawn mowers without fluids
  • Televisions, computers
  • Tires (any size on or off rim)
  • Appliances - no charge
  • Air conditioners, refrigerators, freezers, microwaves, dehumidifiers, furnaces, stoves, washers, dryers, dishwashers, water heaters, etc.
• All yard waste will need to be hauled to the MWA Metro Compost Center at 1601 Harriett St. Yard waste is NOT accepted at the neighborhood SCRUB sites.
  • Brush, tree limbs 24” diameter or less; maximum length 10’
  • Prunings
  • Loose leaves
  • Loose grass clippings
  • Straw, hay
• SCRUB Items Not Allowed
  • Car batteries, propane tanks; toxic liquids such as oil, paint, etc.; toxic or hazardous chemicals. Call Metro Waste Authority’s Regional Collection Center for Household Hazardous Waste at 967-5512 to dispose of these items.
• Unloading Procedure
  • Ask where to unload
  • Plan to unload your own vehicle within 15 minutes
  • Place all items in dumpsters or compactors as directed
  • Clean up your own mess
