Attention All Licensed Professionals and Contractors

The State of Iowa Building Code Bureau has implemented a state wide licensing program for electricians and electrical contractors and the State of Iowa is in the process of doing the same for both the mechanical and plumbing trades. Presently electrical licensing has moved to the State level. Permits, however, are still required to be obtained from the City of Des Moines.

The State Department of Public Health is in the process of implementing a mechanical and plumbing licensing program. It is anticipated that the completion of the transition to the State from the local level will be sometime later this year. The licenses for plumbing and mechanical have started to be issued by the Department of Public Health and as such the City of Des Moines will honor these licenses as they are presented. Licenses issued and current for these trades by the City of Des Moines will be recognized until the state has completed the licensing transition period. The City of Des Moines requires a Master’s license and a contractor’s license in order to obtain permits. Please contact the City of Des Moines at (515) 283-4200 for more information. Monitor this webpage for updates and information on the transition.
