Fire Prevention Bureau

The City of Des Moines Fire Prevention Bureau is located at Fire Station #1, 900 Mulberry, Des Moines Iowa, 50309. Phone, (515) 283-4240, Fax: (515) 283-4907, firedept@dmgov.org.

The Fire Prevention Bureau consists of the District Chief/Fire Marshal, one (1) Fire Protection Engineer, two (2) Senior Fire Prevention Inspectors assigned to Fire Investigation and five (5) Fire Prevention Inspectors.

The Fire Prevention Bureau conducts fire inspections in\for commercial buildings for city and state licenses, certificate of occupancy permits, general fire safety inspections, hazardous operations permits, acceptance testing of fire protection systems, installation and removal of underground and above ground storage tanks.

Other duties include the handling of both citizen and Fire Department officer complaints, plan review for compliance to the International Fire Code, 2006, coordination of Knox Box installations, in-service training for company officers, issue false alarm (as defined by City Ordinance) citations, in-service training for the business community, general fire safety presentations and public education.

The Des Moines Fire Prevention Bureau also delivers presentations on fire safety to civic groups, schools, churches and other organizations.
